Segway Xaber 300

Twenty-one kilowatts, and 187 pounds to move

The number that matters on a dirt bike is not power. It is power divided by weight, and Segway quote 0.25 kW per kilogram for the Xaber 300 — a 21kW peak in a chassis weighing 187 lbs. Everything else on this page is about keeping that under control.

Segway list the Xaber 300 as test-ride only rather than a click-and-ship purchase. That suits us: we have six shops, and this is a machine nobody should buy without sitting on it first.

Three systems that ride with you

What Segway built for the rider

Read Segway’s own list for this electric bike and it is not a list of numbers. It is three things that make a great deal of power usable.

HILL HOLD

No rollback on a slope

Stop on a climb and the electric bike holds itself. Anyone who has tried to restart on a steep, loose slope while stopping the electric bike rolling backwards knows exactly how much this is worth. It turns a technical section from a problem into a pause.

E-CLUTCH

A clutch feel, electronically

The e-clutch simulates the clutch of a conventional motorcycle, so the techniques a petrol rider already has — feathering out of a corner, controlling a wheel on a step — still work. It is what makes an electric dirt bike feel familiar to someone crossing over.

TRACTION

Selectable, terrain-adaptive

Traction control that adapts to the surface and can be switched off entirely. Both halves matter: on a wet root section you want it, and on a deliberate slide you do not.

CONTROLLER

Segway’s own X720

Segway developed the controller themselves rather than buying one in, which is how the power delivery, the e-clutch and the traction control end up behaving as one system rather than three.

The chassis

Marzocchi at the front, 270 mm underneath

Suspension is tunable Marzocchi with 220 mm of front travel and 220 mm of wheel travel at the rear. Marzocchi is a name from motocross rather than from the electric world, and tunable means it can be set for a rider and a track rather than left at an average.

270 mm of ground clearance and a 1295 mm wheelbase on an aluminium alloy frame. Ground clearance is what decides whether a rock is an obstacle or scenery.

Braking is four-piston hydraulic discs at both ends on 220 mm rotors — the same specification front and rear, which is unusual and tells you the rear brake is expected to work as hard as the front on a descent.

Tires are 70/100-19 front and 80/100-17 rear, run at 1.2 to 1.5 bar. Segway rate the payload at 150 kg and the electric bike for riders 18 and over.

This one you have to ride first

Six shops across New York and California. Segway themselves list the Xaber 300 as a test-ride machine rather than a click-and-ship one, and we agree — 21 kilowatts is not something to meet for the first time in your own driveway.

Questions

Segway Xaber 300, answered

How powerful is the Xaber 300?

21 kW at peak in a chassis weighing 187 lbs, which Segway put at 0.25 kW per kilogram and describe as class-leading. On a dirt bike the power-to-weight figure is the one that tells you how it will feel, and that is a strong one.

What is hill hold and why does it matter?

Stop on a climb and the electric bike holds itself rather than rolling back. Anyone who has tried to restart on a steep, loose slope while stopping the electric bike rolling backwards knows what that is worth — it turns a technical section from a problem into a pause.

What is the e-clutch?

It simulates the clutch of a conventional motorcycle, so techniques a petrol rider already has still work: feathering out of a corner, lifting a wheel over a step. It is what makes this feel familiar to someone crossing over from a combustion electric bike.

Can I turn the traction control off?

Yes. It is selectable and terrain-adaptive, and both halves matter — on a wet root section you want it, and on a deliberate slide you do not.

What suspension does it have?

Tunable Marzocchi with 220 mm of front travel and 220 mm of wheel travel at the rear. Marzocchi is a motocross name rather than an electric-world one, and tunable means it can be set up for a rider and a track.

What brakes does it use?

Four-piston hydraulic discs at both ends on 220 mm rotors. The same specification front and rear is unusual, and it tells you the rear brake is expected to work as hard as the front on a descent.

How fast does it go?

Segway list a maximum of 96 km/h, which is about 60 mph. This is a dirt bike intended for private land and off-road use, and where you can legally ride it varies by state and city. Tell us where you plan to ride and we will give you a straight answer.

Can it get wet?

It carries an IPX5 rating, so light rain and wet roads are within it. Avoid standing water. One safety point worth stating plainly: never charge an electric dirt bike that is wet, or one whose battery looks swollen or damaged. Bring it straight in to us instead.

What colours does it come in?

Shred Velvet, which is the red, and Black Diamond, which is the black. Same price either way — pick the finish on this page.

Why can I not just order one online?

Segway list this model as test-ride only rather than a shipped purchase, and honestly we think they are right. Come and sit on one at any of our six shops, ride it, and we will take the order from there.

What size rider does it suit?

Segway rate it for riders 18 and over, with a payload of 150 kg. The 1295 mm wheelbase and 270 mm ground clearance make it a full-size machine rather than a scaled-down one.

What warranty comes with it?

A year of cover through us as standard, and we handle any claim with Segway for you. Segway is a brand we carry rather than one we design, so the three-year cover on Wilson’s-designed rides does not apply here.

Who services it, and can you get parts?

Our own technicians, at all six shops, with express service available at every one. We service any brand, whether you bought it from us or not.
