Hiboy DK1

Three things you decide before they get on

The Hiboy DK1 Electric Dirt Bike will do 15.5 mph and suits riders from three to ten years old, which is a seven-year window and the widest of any kids ride we carry. A machine that spans that much age only works because the adult sets the terms. These are the three settings that matter, and none of them are on the spec sheet.

You decide

The speed

Three modes, selected on the machine rather than chosen by the rider. A four-year-old and a ten-year-old can share this one because the ceiling moves.

5 · 7.5 · 15.5 mph
You decide

The ground

Knobbly tires and suspension at both ends mean grass, dirt and gravel are where it belongs. Softer to land on than tarmac, and it rides better there anyway.

Private land, garden, permitted trails
You decide

The gear

A helmet every time, pads while they are learning. We fit both in store, and we would rather size them properly than sell you a box.

Everything below is about the machine. Everything above is about how it gets used, and in our experience that is what decides whether it is still being ridden a year later.

Three to ten years old

Bought once, rather than replaced twice

Hiboy quotes three to ten, against the DK2's three to seven. Those extra three years are the entire argument for spending $60 more, and they only materialise if you actually move the speed mode up as your child gets better.

A three-year-old on Low at 5 mph and a nine-year-old on High at 15.5 mph are having genuinely different experiences on the same machine. That is unusual at this price and it is why we point most families here rather than at the smaller one, unless the child is very young or the four colours have already settled the matter.

One number runs the other way. The DK1 carries 140 lb where the DK2 carries 150, which is an odd inversion on the older child's machine. If you are buying for a heavier ten-year-old, check that figure before anything else on this page.

Both are 38 lb and share a chassis. Hiboy's drawings put the DK1 at 44.3 inches long against the DK2's 43.7, with the same width and height, so the difference between them is motor, battery and speed rather than size.

Sprung at both ends

The parts a child notices, and the one you should

Twin coil springs in the fork and a coil-over shock at the rear. To a seven-year-old that is what makes it look like a real motorcycle, and they are not wrong: it is the same arrangement, scaled down.

The reason it matters to you is different. Suspension is what keeps a child on rough ground for an hour instead of twenty minutes, and rough ground is where you want them rather than on a road.

The part to actually check is the brake. It is a mechanical disc, and it is the single component we would want set up correctly before a first ride, because a lever a small hand cannot pull hard enough is a lever that does not work. We adjust the reach for the rider in front of us before anything leaves the shop.

Rated to a 10° slope, with the 300W motor doing the work.

  • Front — twin coil-sprung fork
  • Rear — coil-over shock
  • Brake — mechanical disc
  • Tires — pneumatic, knobbly tread
  • Sealing — IPX4

Thirteen miles, and a gauge so you know where you are in them

The DK1 carries a bigger pack than the DK2 and gets 13.7 miles from it. At the speeds a child actually rides, that is most of a Saturday.

There is a battery level display built into the throttle housing. It is a small thing that prevents a specific and very tiresome outcome: a flat machine at the far end of a field and a parent carrying 38 lb back to the car.

Charging takes four to five hours from empty, so plan it overnight rather than between two sessions. Hiboy rates the cells for more than 800 charge cycles, which at a couple of rides a week is years rather than months.

A practical habit worth forming: charge it the evening you get home rather than the morning you want to use it. Everything about owning one of these gets easier if it lives on the charger between rides.

Choosing between the two

DK1 or DK2, decided in one table

These are the only two electric dirt bikes we stock and they share a chassis, so the choice is narrow and worth making deliberately. Sixty dollars separates them.

Take the DK1 unless your child is at the younger end and likely to stay there, or unless they have already picked out the green one. Take the DK2 if the 150 lb rating is the number you need. For a much younger child, the BK1 is a balance bike with no pedals at all.

Seat height is the figure a parent most wants and Hiboy does not publish it, so we have not guessed. Bring your child to any of our six shops and we will sit them on one. Whether they can get their feet down is the whole test, and it takes a minute.

Questions

Hiboy DK1, answered

What age is the DK1 for?

Hiboy sizes it for three to ten years old, which is the widest window of any kids ride we stock. The practical limits are the 140 lb weight rating and whether your child can get their feet down.

How fast does it go?

15.5 mph at the top setting, with 7.5 mph and 5 mph below it. The mode is set on the machine by you rather than chosen by the rider.

Can I stop it going that fast?

Yes, and you should for a beginner. Leave it on Low at 5 mph to start, move to 7.5 when they are steady, and hold High back until you are genuinely confident.

How far does it go on a charge?

Up to 13.7 miles in good conditions. Rider weight, ground and speed mode all change it.

How long does it take to charge?

Four to five hours from empty. Hiboy rates the cells for more than 800 charge cycles.

How much weight can it take?

140 lb. Worth noting that the smaller DK2 takes 150 lb, so for a heavier child the cheaper machine may actually be the right one.

Does it have suspension?

Yes, at both ends. Twin coil springs in the front fork and a coil-over shock at the rear.

How does it brake?

A mechanical disc brake. We set the lever reach for your child before the machine leaves the shop, because a lever a small hand cannot reach is the one real safety issue on a machine like this.

Can I see how much battery is left?

Yes. There is a battery level display built into the throttle housing where the rider can see it.

What is the seat height?

Hiboy does not publish it, so we have not estimated one. Bring your child in and we will sit them on it, which answers the question properly.

Where is my child allowed to ride it?

An electric dirt bike has a throttle, no pedals and a motorcycle layout, which usually puts it outside what is permitted on roads, sidewalks and shared paths. Private land, a garden and permitted trails are the safe answers. Rules vary by state, town and park, so tell us where you are and we will tell you what applies.

Can it be ridden in the wet?

It is IPX4 rated, so damp grass and splashes are within it. One safety point worth stating plainly: never charge it while it is wet, or if the battery looks swollen or damaged. Bring it straight in to us instead.

What should my child wear?

A helmet every single time, plus knee and elbow pads while they are learning. We size and fit both in store. Stay close for the first few outings and for any ride on the top mode.

What colours does it come in?

Blue and red, at the same price, both in stock. If colour choice matters to your child, the DK2 comes in four.

Is it the same size as the DK2?

Almost exactly. Hiboy's drawings put the DK1 at 44.3 inches long and the DK2 at 43.7, with identical width and height, and both weigh 38 lb. You are choosing a motor and a battery, not a size.

Who services it, and what warranty comes with it?

Our own technicians, at all six shops, with express service available at every one. Hiboy is a brand we carry, so it comes with a year of warranty cover and we handle the claim with Hiboy for you. We service any brand, whether you bought it from us or not.
