KUKIRIN G2 Ultra

A turbo button, and the honesty to show what it costs

The KUKIRIN G2 Ultra electric scooter is the only machine in the range with a turbo mode. What makes it interesting is not the extra three miles an hour: it is that KUKIRIN publishes range for turbo on and turbo off, across all three speed modes. Six figures, including the ones that make their own feature look expensive.

Read the bottom row against the one above it. Turbo costs nothing in Eco, three miles in Sport, and three miles in Race for three miles an hour more speed. That is a straight trade and KUKIRIN prints both halves of it.

Dual 800W · 31 mph turbo · 34 mi · 48V 18Ah · 26° climbing

Most manufacturers publish one range figure taken in the most flattering mode available. Six figures, two of which show a feature costing you distance, is a different standard of disclosure and it is worth saying so.

Fixed dual drive

Why the KUKIRIN G2 Ultra electric scooter drives both wheels constantly

Some dual-motor machines run one motor and bring the second in only when you demand it. The G2 Ultra uses fixed dual drive: both 800W motors are working all the time, splitting whatever you ask for.

The benefit is grip. Two wheels each handling half the load are far less likely to break traction on gravel, wet paint or grass than one wheel handling all of it. That is why KUKIRIN describes it as making climbing, gravel and grass straightforward rather than as a speed feature.

1600W of combined rated output gives a 26° climbing rating, between the G2 Max's 22° and the G2 Master's 28°.

The cost of always running both motors is efficiency, which is exactly what the range matrix above shows. 34 miles at the top of Eco is competitive; 22 miles in turbo Race is the honest bottom of it.

Sprung at both ends

Dual suspension, two braking systems, full lighting

The G2 Ultra is better equipped than its price suggests, and three things stand out.

Dual suspension. Sprung at the front and the rear rather than the front alone, which on 10-inch wheels over city surfaces makes more difference than another inch of tire would.

Two braking systems. A disc brake and an electronic brake, front and rear. Having a mechanical brake and an electronic one means you are not relying on either alone, and the e-brake takes load off the pads in ordinary stopping.

Turn signals front and rear, with a brake light and a 60° wide-angle headlight. Indicators remain rare at this money and they are the reason to choose a KUKIRIN over a cheaper machine for city riding.

The battery compartment gets a waterproof and dustproof groove around the alloy plate, which is the kind of detail that only shows up in the third wet winter.

  • Suspension — dual, front and rear
  • Brakes — disc plus electronic, front and rear
  • Lighting — 60° headlight, turn signals, brake light
  • Tires — 10″ vacuum
  • Sealing — IP54, sealed battery compartment

How to actually use it

When to leave turbo on, and when to switch it off

A feature with a published cost is one you can make an informed decision about, which is unusual enough to be worth a section.

Leave it off for commuting. In Eco it changes nothing at all, and in Sport it costs three miles for no speed gain at that setting. If your ride is a fixed distance you need to complete, turbo off is simply free range.

Switch it on for the top mode. Race with turbo is 31 mph against 28, which is the only place the feature actually does anything. It costs three miles of range, so it is a trade you make for a specific stretch of road rather than a setting you leave engaged.

Plan around 22 miles if you ride hard. That is the honest floor: turbo on, Race mode, the whole way. Anyone whose route is longer than that should either moderate the mode or look at the G2 Master, which returns 43 miles.

The 48V 18Ah pack takes 9 to 10 hours to charge, so a day that empties it is a night on the charger.

Questions

KUKIRIN G2 Ultra, answered

What does turbo mode do on the KUKIRIN G2 Ultra?

It raises the top speed mode from 28 mph to 31 mph. It changes nothing in Eco and nothing in Sport, so the only place it does anything is the top setting.

What does turbo cost in range?

Nothing in Eco, and three miles in each of Sport and Race. KUKIRIN publishes all six figures rather than only the flattering one, which is unusual and worth crediting.

How fast is it?

31 mph with turbo engaged, 28 mph without. The lower two modes are 16 mph and 22 mph in both states.

How far does it go on a charge?

Between 22 and 34 miles depending on mode and turbo. Eco returns 34 miles either way; turbo Race is the 22-mile floor.

What is fixed dual drive?

Both motors run all the time and split the load, rather than a second motor cutting in on demand. The benefit is grip on gravel, wet paint and grass, because two wheels sharing the work are less likely to break traction.

Does it have suspension?

Yes, dual suspension front and rear. On 10-inch wheels over city surfaces that makes more difference than a larger tire would.

How does it brake?

A disc brake and an electronic brake, front and rear. Two systems rather than relying on either alone, and the e-brake takes load off the pads in ordinary stopping.

Does it have turn signals?

Yes, front and rear, with a brake light and a 60-degree wide-angle headlight. Indicators are uncommon at this price.

Can it climb hills?

It is rated to 26°, between the G2 Max at 22° and the G2 Master at 28°.

How much weight can it carry?

264 lbs, or 120 kg.

How heavy is it?

67 lbs, or 30 kg, folding to 545 mm tall. That is the shortest folded height in the G2 family.

How long does it take to charge?

Nine to ten hours from empty on the 48V 18Ah pack.

Should I buy this or the G2 Master?

The Master is quicker at 37 mph, climbs better at 28° and goes considerably further at 43 miles. The Ultra adds dual suspension and the turbo toggle, and costs $200 less. If range is the priority, the Master; if ride comfort and grip are, the Ultra.

Can it be ridden in the rain?

It carries an IP54 rating, so light rain and wet roads are within it. Avoid standing water. One safety point worth stating plainly: never charge an electric scooter that is wet, or one whose battery looks swollen or damaged. Bring it straight in to us instead.

How does the warranty option work?

You choose 12 months as standard or 24 months extended at checkout. KUKIRIN is a brand we carry rather than one we design, so it comes with a year of cover through us as standard, and we handle any claim for you.

Who services it, and can you get parts?

Our own technicians, at all six shops, with express service available at every one. We service any brand, whether you bought it from us or not.
