Segway MUXI

Built low, so a load does not change the plot

A cargo electric bike is judged loaded, not empty. The MUXI’s answer is a twin-tube frame that keeps the centre of gravity low, a direct-drive motor with traction control, and 80 miles of range so the errands do not have to be planned around the battery.

The frame

Twin tubes, and a low centre of gravity

The twin-tube design is the whole reason this electric bike handles the way it does. Two frame tubes running low carry the load and the battery near the ground, and a low centre of gravity is what makes a loaded electric bike feel balanced rather than top-heavy.

It shows up in the moments that matter with cargo aboard: pulling away from a stop, walking the electric bike out of a shed, holding a line through a turn with weight on the back.

The 20 by 3.0 inch tires do the rest. A short, fat tire has a large contact patch and a lot of air in it, which is exactly what you want under a load.

Direct drive

A motor with traction control, and a lock inside it

A direct-drive hub motor has no internal gearing, which means fewer moving parts, near-silent running and nothing inside to wear out. On an electric bike that will carry weight for years, that simplicity is worth a lot.

It carries traction control, which is rare on an electric bike and genuinely useful on one built for loads: pulling away on a wet slope with cargo aboard is precisely when a rear wheel wants to spin.

And the AirLock system locks the motor itself. A motor lock is a great deal harder to defeat than a lock on the wheel, because there is nothing exposed to cut.

Assist is metered by a cadence sensor rather than a torque sensor — it reads how fast you are pedalling and delivers power to match.

The battery

UL-certified, IPX7, and watched over

The pack is 48V and 717Wh, water-resistant, UL-certified, and rated IPX7 — survival in temporary immersion rather than merely rain-resistant.

The battery management system runs multiple layers of protection, watching cell balance, temperature and current. On a cargo electric bike that spends its life outdoors and gets charged in a shed, that oversight is the part that keeps the range honest over years.

Charging takes about 6.5 hours for up to 80 miles.

A safety point we state on every electric bike: never charge one that is wet, or one whose battery looks swollen or damaged. Bring it in to us instead.

Questions

Segway MUXI, answered

What makes the MUXI a cargo electric bike?

The twin-tube frame keeps the load and the battery low, which is what makes a loaded electric bike feel balanced rather than top-heavy. Add 20 by 3.0 inch tires with a large contact patch, 80 Nm of torque and traction control, and you have an electric bike designed around weight rather than speed.

What is a direct-drive motor, and why does it matter here?

It has no internal gearing — fewer moving parts, near-silent running and nothing inside to wear out. On an electric bike expected to carry loads for years, that simplicity is worth more than the last few watts.

Does it have traction control?

Yes, which is unusual on an electric bike and genuinely useful on a cargo one. Pulling away on a wet slope with weight on the back is exactly when a rear wheel wants to spin, and this stops it.

How does the AirLock motor lock work?

It locks the motor itself rather than a wheel or a frame tube. There is nothing exposed to cut, which makes it a great deal harder to defeat than a conventional lock. It also unlocks as you approach and locks as you walk away.

How far does it go and how long does it charge?

Up to 80 miles from a 48V 717Wh battery, charging in about 6.5 hours.

Is the battery safe?

UL-certified, water-resistant and rated IPX7, with a multi-layer battery management system watching cell balance, temperature and current. Never charge an electric bike that is wet or whose battery looks swollen or damaged — bring it in to us.

Can I ride it in the rain?

It carries an IPX5 body and IPX7 battery rating, so light rain and wet roads are within it. Avoid standing water. One safety point worth stating plainly: never charge an electric bike that is wet, or one whose battery looks swollen or damaged. Bring it straight in to us instead.

Torque sensor or cadence sensor?

Cadence. It reads how fast you are pedalling and delivers power to match, which is predictable and easy to get along with. If you specifically want a torque sensor, the Myon has one.

How fast does it go?

20 mph. A cargo electric bike is not built for speed, and 20 mph with a load on board is plenty.

What colours does it come in?

Dusty Sage and Olive Rush. Both the same price; pick the finish on this page.

Can you fit a child seat or panniers?

Bring what you want to carry and we will fit it in the shop. It is also the best way to test the electric bike — loaded, the way you will actually use it.

What warranty comes with it?

A year of cover through us as standard, and we handle any claim with Segway for you. Segway is a brand we carry rather than one we design, so the three-year cover on Wilson’s-designed rides does not apply here.

Who services it, and can you get parts?

Our own technicians, at all six shops, with express service available at every one. We service any brand, whether you bought it from us or not.
