Segway Xyber

One battery, or two

The Xyber is really two machines in one frame, and which one you have depends on how many batteries are in it. Power, torque, range and top speed all change. Segway publish both sets of numbers, so here they are side by side.

One battery — 1440Wh

3000W of power, 120 Nm of torque and up to 56 miles of range. Lighter, and plenty for most riding.

Two batteries — 2880Wh

6000W, 175 Nm and up to 112 miles. This is also the only configuration in which Segway quote the 43 mph figure, and they mark that off-road use only.

2.7s 0–20 mph · 20 × 5.0″ tires · 408 lb limit · 10A charge · 3.7 h

Segway are explicit that the 43 mph top speed applies off-road with both batteries installed. We would rather print that than let you find it in the manual.

Frame and load

Cast aluminium, rated to 408 pounds

The frame is cast aluminium with a 408 lb total weight limit, rider and rack together. That is a serious number and it is what lets the Xyber be used as a load carrier as well as a trail electric bike.

It rolls on 20 by 5.0 inch tires with flat-resistant inserts — five inches of tire is close to motorcycle territory, and the inserts mean a thorn does not end the day.

Suspension is 110 mm of dual-crown fork at the front and 100 mm of five-stage quick-adjust at the rear. A dual-crown fork is braced above and below the headtube, which is how you keep a wide front wheel pointing straight under load.

Four pistons at the front, 220 mm of rotor

Braking is four-piston hydraulic at the front on a 220 mm rotor, and two-piston on a 180 mm rotor at the rear. Those are mountain-bike downhill specifications, and on a machine that can weigh 408 lbs loaded and do 43 mph, they are the correct ones.

More pistons spread the clamping force evenly across a bigger pad; a bigger rotor sheds more heat. Together that is what stops brakes fading on a long descent, which is the failure mode that actually matters here.

Charging is 10 amps, filling a 1440Wh battery in about 3.7 hours — quick for a pack this size, and the reason two batteries is a practical proposition rather than an overnight commitment.

The electronics package

LOCKING

AirLock, on the kickstand

Drop the kickstand and AirLock engages both electric and mechanical locks. It is the rare security feature that costs no effort at all, because you were putting the stand down anyway.

TRACKING

Apple Find My and GPS together

Dual positioning, which reaches places a satellite fix alone does not.

DISPLAY

A screen that adjusts itself

Water-resistant and high resolution, with brightness that follows the ambient light. A scroll wheel handles settings and power levels without a menu maze.

LIGHTING

Daytime running lights to 1300 lumens

Environmental sensors take the output up as the light drops. Thirteen hundred lumens is a genuine trail-riding headlight.

ASSIST

Adaptive, from multiple sensors

Set the power mode yourself or let the system read the sensors and adapt. On mixed terrain, letting it decide is usually the better ride.

UPDATES

Over the air

Software updates arrive through the Segway Mobility App, so the electric bike keeps improving after purchase.

Questions

Segway Xyber, answered

What changes between one battery and two?

Almost everything. One battery gives 3000W, 120 Nm and up to 56 miles. Two give 6000W, 175 Nm and up to 112 miles. The 43 mph top speed Segway quote applies with both batteries installed, and they mark it off-road use only.

How fast is the Xyber?

Segway state 43 mph with both batteries installed, off-road use only. That is their wording and we are not going to soften it: this is a machine whose top end is intended for private land and trails, not a cycle path. Tell us where you ride and we will give you a straight answer about what applies.

How far can it go?

Up to 56 miles on one 1440Wh battery, or up to 112 miles with two. Each charges at 10 amps in about 3.7 hours, which is quick enough that running two is practical rather than an overnight commitment.

How much can it carry?

The cast aluminium frame is rated to 408 lbs total, rider and rack together.

What tires does it use?

20 by 5.0 inch, with flat-resistant inserts. Five inches of tire is close to motorcycle territory, and the inserts mean a thorn does not end the day.

What suspension does it have?

110 mm of dual-crown fork at the front and 100 mm of five-stage quick-adjust at the rear. A dual-crown fork is braced above and below the headtube, which is how a wide front wheel is kept pointing straight under load.

What brakes does it have?

Four-piston hydraulic on a 220 mm rotor at the front, two-piston on 180 mm at the rear. Those are downhill mountain-bike specifications, and on a machine this heavy and this quick they are the right ones — more pistons spread the force, a bigger rotor sheds more heat, and neither fades on a long descent.

How does AirLock work on the Xyber?

Drop the kickstand and it engages both electric and mechanical locks. It costs no effort at all, because you were putting the stand down anyway.

Can I ride it in the rain?

It carries an IPX7 battery rating rating, so light rain and wet roads are within it. Avoid standing water. One safety point worth stating plainly: never charge an electric bike that is wet, or one whose battery looks swollen or damaged. Bring it straight in to us instead.

Is it road legal?

That depends on how it is configured and where you are. Segway mark the 43 mph figure as off-road use only, and rules vary by state and city. Come in and tell us your intended use — we will give you the honest answer rather than the convenient one.

Xyber or Xafari?

The Xafari is the lighter, more manageable fat tire electric bike, road-classed and fitting riders from 5 ft 1 in. The Xyber is a much bigger off-road machine. If your riding is streets and paths, the Xafari is almost certainly the right one.

What warranty comes with it?

A year of cover through us as standard, and we handle any claim with Segway for you. Segway is a brand we carry rather than one we design, so the three-year cover on Wilson’s-designed rides does not apply here. Segway also publish their own limited two-year warranty on this model, which runs alongside ours.

Who services it, and can you get parts?

Our own technicians, at all six shops, with express service available at every one. We service any brand, whether you bought it from us or not.
