The four things a parent asks first
The ES1 is for riders aged four to ten, and the person buying it is not the person riding it. So here are the answers before anything else.
It will not pull away on its own
The ES1 has no throttle. It senses movement instead: a child steps on, pushes off with a foot, and once they are already rolling at walking pace the motor picks it up to five. Stand still and nothing happens.
That is the detail worth understanding before you buy. A twist grip can be pressed by accident while a child is climbing on. This cannot.
- Step onBoth feet on the deck. Nothing is powered yet.
- Push offA scoot to about 2 mph wakes the motor up.
- GlideIt carries on to 5 mph and holds there.
- Tap the fenderFoot on the rear mudguard slows and stops it.
- Leave itTen seconds standing still and it beeps and shuts down.
Eleven and a half pounds, and pinch-free
Light enough that a child can pick it up off the grass themselves, and light enough that you can carry it home in one hand when they have had enough. The folding points are designed pinch-free, which matters on something small fingers will be handling.
The deck is non-slip, the grips are soft, and the materials are non-toxic. Six-inch wheels: PU at the front, solid rubber at the back, so there is nothing to inflate and nothing to puncture.
- Weight 11.7 lbs
- Wheels 6″ PU front, solid rear
- Max load 110 lbs / 50 kg
- Water resistance IPX5
- Certification CPC and UL 2272
The wheel lights up, and so does the deck
The front wheel glows through the colors as it turns and a strip along the deck does the same. It is the reason a child picks this one, and it makes them easier to see at dusk, which is the reason you will not mind.
Six miles on a charge covers an afternoon in a park several times over, and five to six hours on the charger puts it back. Availability varies by color, so check the picker above or call us.

Hiboy ES1, answered
What age is the Hiboy ES1 for?
Hiboy sizes it for four to ten years old. The limit in practice is the 110 lb weight rating and the 29.5 inch bar height, and the stem adjusts within that.
How fast does it go?
Five miles an hour, and that is fixed. There is no faster mode and nothing to unlock.
Does it have a throttle?
No. It senses motion instead. Your child steps on and pushes off, and once they are rolling at about 2 mph the motor takes over. Standing still, it does nothing.
How does it brake?
A foot on the rear fender. It is mechanical, so it works regardless of battery level, and it is the same motion as the kick scooter they have already ridden.
Is the battery certified?
Yes, UL 2272. Hiboy also holds a CPC certificate for the ES1, which is the children's product certification required for sale in the US.
What is the maximum rider weight?
110 lbs, or 50 kg.
How far does it go on a charge?
Up to six miles. Rider weight, surface and how much stopping and starting happens all change the figure.
How long does it take to charge?
Five to six hours from empty with the supplied charger.
Do the tires need pumping up?
No. The front is PU and the rear is solid rubber, so there is nothing to inflate and nothing to puncture.
Does it turn itself off?
Yes. Ten seconds standing still and it beeps and powers down, so it is not left running in a hallway.
How heavy is it to carry?
11.7 lbs. A child of six or seven can usually pick it up themselves, and an adult can carry it one-handed.
Can it be ridden in the rain?
It carries an IPX5 rating, which is the highest in our kids range, so damp ground and splashes are within what it handles. One safety point worth stating plainly: never charge an electric scooter that is wet, or one whose battery looks swollen. Bring it straight in to us instead.
What should they wear?
A helmet, every time, and knee and elbow pads while they are learning. We fit both in store, and getting the helmet size right matters more than the brand on it.
