Segway F3

Where you actually touch it

Read Segway’s own list of what the F3 is about and almost every item is a contact point: the suspension under your feet, the size of the board they stand on, the shape of the grips, the screen you read. It is a commuter built from the rider inwards, and at $849.99 that is a sensible thing to spend the money on.

The front hydraulic suspension on the Segway F3 electric scooter
Two different systems, chosen for two different jobs.
Two kinds of suspension

Hydraulic at the front, elastomer at the back

The F3 uses a hydraulic shock at the front and an elastomer at the rear, and the pairing is deliberate. Hydraulic damping controls the return after a hit, which is what the front wheel needs so it settles instead of bouncing back at the bars.

An elastomer at the rear is a solid block that absorbs and recovers with no fluid, no seals and nothing to service. Under the back wheel, where the loads are steadier, it does the job and then keeps doing it for years.

It is a more thoughtful arrangement than fitting the same thing twice, and it is the main reason the F3 rides better than its price suggests.

The board

Twenty inches long, seven wide, magnesium alloy

Deck size is the specification nobody compares and everybody feels. At 7.09 by 20.08 inches the F3 gives you room to stand with one foot behind the other, shift your weight on a long ride, and put a foot down without hunting for space.

The frame under it is integrated magnesium alloy — one piece rather than parts bolted together, which is what stops a deck flexing and creaking as it ages.

Segway rate the electric scooter for riders 5 ft 3 in and up, aged 16 and over, carrying up to 265 lbs.

RANGE

Forty-four miles, or twenty-five

Segway publish it by mode: about 44 miles in Eco, 31 in Drive, 25 in Sport. A five-mile round-trip commute is a fortnight of Eco riding on one charge. A full charge takes about eight hours, so it is an overnight machine.

DISPLAY

Navigation and calls on the bar

The display carries turn-by-turn directions and incoming call notifications alongside speed and battery. Route-finding without taking a phone out is worth more in traffic than any number on this page.

UNLOCKING

Hands-free, at a distance you choose

Pair it with the Segway Mobility App and it unlocks over Bluetooth as you walk up. The range at which that happens is adjustable, which is worth setting if you park somewhere with a lot of foot traffic.

TRACKING

Apple Find My, built in

Activate it through the Segway app and the F3 appears in Find My beside your phone and keys. Set it up on day one, not after something happens.

LIGHTING

A 6W headlight, three times brighter

Automatic, angle-adjustable, and by Segway’s reckoning three times the output of the previous generation. It comes on by itself as the light drops.

STABILITY

SegRide

Segway’s stability enhancement system, working at speed, through sharp turns and on wet roads.

Questions

Segway F3, answered

How fast does the Segway F3 go, and how far?

20 mph, with range published by mode: about 44 miles in Eco, 31 in Drive and 25 in Sport. The motor peaks at 1000W and handles a 20% incline.

Why hydraulic at the front and elastomer at the back?

Because they do different jobs well. Hydraulic damping controls the return after a hit, which is what the front wheel needs so it settles rather than bouncing into the bars. An elastomer at the rear absorbs and recovers with no fluid and no seals, so under the steadier rear loads it simply works and keeps working.

How big is the footboard?

7.09 by 20.08 inches, on an integrated magnesium alloy frame. That is enough room to stand with one foot behind the other and shift your weight on a long ride — the specification nobody compares and everybody feels.

How much does the F3 weigh?

42.3 lbs, which is genuinely liftable for most adults over a short flight of stairs. It carries riders up to 265 lbs.

How long does it take to charge?

About eight hours, which makes it an overnight charge. With 44 miles available in Eco, most commuters plug in once or twice a week.

Does it have navigation?

Yes, on the display, along with incoming call notifications. Following a route without taking your phone out at a junction is the sort of thing that stops feeling like a feature and starts feeling necessary.

Does the F3 work with Apple Find My?

Yes. Activate it through the Segway Mobility App and it appears in Find My alongside your phone and keys. It also unlocks hands-free over Bluetooth, at a distance you can set yourself.

Is it waterproof?

It carries an IPX5 water-resistance rating, so light rain and wet roads are within it. Avoid standing water. One safety point worth stating plainly: never charge an electric scooter that is wet, or one whose battery looks swollen or damaged. Bring it straight in to us instead.

What size are the tires?

10-inch tubeless self-sealing, run at 42 to 48 psi. Correct pressure is what keeps both the range and the steering feel where they should be, and we check it at every service.

What is SegRide?

Segway's stability enhancement system, which keeps the electric scooter composed at speed, through sharp turns and on slippery roads.

Who is the F3 for?

A rider who wants a comfortable daily commuter rather than a fast one. Everything Segway spent money on here — the suspension pairing, the deck, the grips, the display — is about the hour you spend on it rather than the top speed. If you want pace instead, look at the Max G3.

F3 or E3 Pro?

The E3 Pro is $250 less, with dual elastomer suspension and 34 miles of range. The F3 adds the hydraulic front end, a bigger deck, ten more miles and the navigation display. If the ride quality is what you are buying, the F3 is the one.

What warranty comes with it?

A year of cover through us as standard, and we handle any claim with Segway for you. Segway is a brand we carry rather than one we design, so the three-year cover on Wilson’s-designed rides does not apply here.

Who services it, and can you get parts?

Our own technicians, at all six shops, with express service available at every one. We service any brand, whether you bought it from us or not.
